It is an excellent anti-anxiety agent with a very good safety profile (Bloomfield, 1998).
Valerian root is also very good for inducing sleep, and it as appears to decrease the incidence of nightmares (Bloomfield, 1998).
As a sedative, Bloomfield (1998) recommends 300-900 milligrams taken one hour before bedtime. For general anxiety relief, the effects are dose-dependent. Therefore, follow the manufacturer’s directions on the label until the desired effects are produced.
